So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

The Edge of the World
by: zanzibar

Dakar sat at the edge of the world. Stars danced in his peripheral vision, only to disappear when he looked for them. The world was dark, the light was barely visible in the dying twilight. His muscles felt heavy. He felt like if his skin weren’t there to hold them in, they would just flow out all over the ground. His skin strained with the effort. He looked down at his talon. The outer layer of skin was peeling just before the claw. The time for shedding was drawing nigh. How inconvenient.
He lifted his wings toward the heavens, poised to take off into the spinning galaxies of stars. He thought of Jasper, the night he had awoken to see him out on the ledge, hands raised to his Gods in the skies. This must be how he felt. How did he stop himself from hurling himself into the vast black abyss, falling upwards forever to join his heavenly companions? But of course. Jasper has no wings. He always had to remind himself of that fact… Jasper just seemed so much like a dragon sometimes, in his kindness, his intelligence. It was hard to remember that he was only human. How cruel a joke it was, he thought, to fill mankind with boundless wonder when he should look upon the sky, and then deny him the wings to fly there. And equally, to make sacred to dragons the gift of fire, and then to deny them the ability to feel it in their lungs.
He looked into the sky and the overwhelming sensation of being alive filled him so suddenly he felt he must be overcome by it. Like the Universe was a great ocean, and the stars beacons of a lost race inviting him to whirl with them through space forever. It was then that he realized that it was not twilight that he had seen, but dawn.
